What is Mental Health?

Mental health means our emotional, psychological and social well-being. It affects how we:

  1. how we think, act and make decisions
  2. how we feel and manage our emotions
  3. how we talk and interact with others
  4. how we deal with stress and challenges

Good mental health does not mean being happy all the time. It means being able to face all kinds of problems and difficulties in life, having the strength to face them and building good and meaningful relationships.

What Affects Mental Health?

Many factors can shape our mental health, including:

  1. Biological factors – such as our genetics, brain chemistry, and hormonal imbalances may also be responsible for our mental health. Some people are more prone to stress, anxiety, and depression because of their family history.
  2. Life experiences – There are many events in our lives that can affect our brains, such as stressful events, trauma, conflict, or childhood experiences.
  3. Lifestyle choices – Often, the way we eat, drink, manage our things, physical activities, and exercise have a direct impact on our mental health. If we do not manage our stress, do not get good sleep and do not socialize with people around us, this can aggravate the situation and help in the worsening of problems.

Signs of Good and Poor Mental Health

Mental health is a range of experiences—sometimes we thrive, grow, and sometimes we struggle. Here are some signs to look out for:

Signs of good mental health:

  • Feeling balanced and emotionally stable
  •  Being able to handle stress and challenges effectively
  •  Maintaining healthy relationships with family and friends
  •  Having a positive outlook on life

Signs of poor mental health:

  •  Persistent feelings of sadness or anxiety
  •  Mood swings or irritability
  •  Pulling away from loved ones and activities you previously enjoyed
  •  Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  •  Changes in sleep or appetite patterns

If you feel that you are suffering from symptoms of poor mental health for a long time, then always remember that you are not alone in this. You can always seek help from your loved ones or an expert.

Why Mental Health Awareness Matters

Mental health has not always been talked about openly in our society. It is still considered a taboo. People are afraid to talk about it for fear of being judged. But the truth is that mental health is just as important as physical health. And that is why ignoring it can have serious consequences. Breaking the stigma around mental health can help people talk about it and seek help without any shame. And in this way, the more we talk about it the more we will be able to normalise mental health, wellness and healing in our society.

How to Take Care of Your Mental Health

Taking care of your mental health is not difficult or complicated. It just requires a little effort:

  1. Prioritize self-care – Doing this makes you feel good from within and brings happiness. Whether it is watching your favorite movie, reading something, traveling, listening to music or spending time with your family and friends.
  2. Talk to someone – You can talk to someone, be it a family member or a friend, with whom you can share your thoughts openly and express your feelings. Doing this will make you feel lighter and it will work as a therapy.
  3. Practice mindfulness – Exercises like pranayama, meditation, deep breathing or journaling can prove to be very effective in reducing stress and help in regulating yourself emotionally.
  4. Eat well and stay active – A balanced diet and regular exercise boost brain functioning and keep our overall mood good. Due to this, we are able to do all our work well.
  5. Have good and sufficient sleep – Enough sleep is very important to stay active. Lack of sleep affects not only mental health but also physical health. It can cause mood swings and emotional instability. At least 7-8 hours of sleep is necessary.
  6. Limit negative influences – Use less social media, and keep distance from toxic people and relationships. Limit the consumption of news that increases anxiety.
